Pain Science is great…but don’t forget the necessity of medical screening…

I was recently presented with a clinical example that reminded me of the necessity of medical screening.

The patient was a pleasant man who had a recent total hip replacement.   The surgery went great and x-rays indicated the replacement took (replacing the worst hip the surgeon had ever seen…I’ve heard the story before…).  At initial evaluation, five days post-surgery, no red flags were noted and the patient appeared to have a great prognosis for recovery.  He understood his post-surgical precautions and was motivated to return to normal.  His primary complaint was post-surgical hip pain.
